About

Christine Bartoletta is a painter and metalsmith.
She finds inspiration in nature and the ever changing seasons. Born in Massachusetts and having grownup on both the northeast and southeast coasts, she is equally drawn to the mountains and the sea. Antiques, literature and fashion also influence her work.
Christine started making jewelry in high school and it quickly became a creative outlet. Soon she began to exhibit her work locally, which allowed her to experiment with materials like wood, metal and found objects from flea markets and vintage shops. She studied painting, art history and English at Colgate University. After graduating from college, she continued her arts education at The Art League, MICA and the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
In 2003 she founded her company Society Hill Designs and sold her jewelry, art and clothing throughout the Washington DC area. After almost 20 years of maintaining several studios and shops, she took a creative pause. A year later, she relaunched the company under her own name and became an independent artist again.
Her jewelry is a mix of metals, natural hand cut stones and pearls. Other favorite materials include beach stones, shells, glass, textiles and found objects. Sometimes a design starts with a sketch, but more often than not it starts with a color, texture or form she wants to explore. Once she begins working with the materials, they become her guide through an evocative world of memories and dreams. Familiar yet unexpected and always unique.
As an artist and maker, Christine has a deep appreciation for the history, people, materials and techniques that have evolved over time. The joy of researching and collecting antique linens, pottery, metal and glass for their handmade beauty has also become an immense source of creative inspiration.
In her painting studio, these objects are often the focus. Working mostly in watercolor and gouache, her paintings pull you up close to reveal the color, line or texture of a piece.
